Evolution of Sunglasses
It is believed that sunglasses have evolved from the Roman Emperor who used gems to watch the gladiators’ competition. From history, sunglasses were said to be invented as early as 1268 and 1289. From available paintings, sunglasses were already used back in 1352 in a painting made by Tommaso da Modena. In the said painting, the person in the paintings is seen to be wearing sunglasses.
In China, judges wore sunglasses during proceedings to hide their expressions in their eyes. This was particularly useful to prevent audience from reading the judges’ eyes when he was giving decisions on any proceedings. This happened before the year of 1430. After 1430, judges in China had the option to use prescribed sunglasses when this type of sunglasses was invented in Italy.
During the 17th century, people started to notice the advantage of the prescribed glasses towards the elderly. Before the invention of the prescribed glasses, the vision of old people will be deteriorated day by day and nothing much can be done to prevent this from happening. During that time, a motto came out as to describe the advantage of the prescribed glasses to the elderly. The motto was entitled ‘A Blessing To The Aged’ and it was used by a manufacturer of the spectacles. The company name is Spectacle Markers Company. No longer after that, prescribed glasses were available in colors, green and blue. The invention of these colored corrective glasses was made possible by James Ayscough.
The shapes of the glasses have evolved year by year. Glasses were made from bones, leathers and metals. One of the main issues revolving around the development of sunglasses is the challenge to keep the glasses comfortably in front of the eyes. This issue was tackled through various experiments and practices. Some of the worth mentioned practices were the use of silk ribbon that circled the ears and the use of weight at the end of the glasses frame to keep the glasses from sliding down the nose.
The development of glasses and sunglasses continued through the years. Problems in keeping eyeglasses on the face or propped on the nose led to experiments. In 1730, glasses’ frame equipped with solid sidepieces was invented by Edward Scarlett. Forty years after the invention, a bifocal lenses was developed by Benjamen Franklin.
Things have changed a lot from the old days. In the last century, sunglasses were mainly used for eyes protection. They are accepted as a must to protect eyes from the sunlight. This has promoted towards a better future for sunglasses development. Sam Foster was responsible in selling sunglasses in 1929. The name of the sunglasses is Foster Grants which was accepted as one of the fashion’s items.
Sunglasses were used among the pilots in 1930's when specific sunglasses to reduce glaring at a high altitude was developed by Bausch & Lomb. This development was made to cater for the request from the Army Air Corps. In 1936, a Polaroid filter was invented by Edward H. Land and this concept was used to make sunglasses. From there, sunglasses became popular starting from movie stars. Even today, we can still see a lot of celebrities wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from the harmful sun light during their press conference and personal outings.
